Berry Telecom is thrilled to share the news that our home City of Salisbury is to become the first UK city with universal access to Openreach Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband. BT engineers are already at work, and expect to be ready by April 2020. Speeds can get as high as 1Gbps.
If you’re unfamiliar with broadband jargon, this may sound less exciting than it is! Well, there are multiple ways of connecting to a network, but most of them involve slower copper cables at some point. With FTTP, much faster fibre optic cables connect you straight to the exchange.
That means a full-fibre connection available to every home and business with a huge boost in speeds, and our fair City is getting there first. Needless to say, as proud Salisbury residents who specialise in connectivity and communications, we couldn’t be happier!
An economic boom for our city
With ultra-fast, more reliable broadband available to every business and home in the City, the economic benefits are huge. Salisbury will have some of the fastest connections in the country. That will make our City attractive to start-ups, and encourage all kinds of innovations that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.
That means a boost in the high-skilled jobs market. As well, it will be a competitive advantage that attracts existing businesses to the City. All this is great news
for pubs, restaurants and cafés, who can look forward to more customers. The potential for growth of the local economy is enormous.
It’s not just business either households and the public sector will benefit too. Property prices are predicted to increase, thanks to the added appeal of the City. Meanwhile, in the public sector, healthcare and local government are increasingly digital. Faster connection means more efficiency, and more potential to embrace game-changing new technologies.
All of this adds up to a better-connected, futureproofed City, primed and ready for the new wave of technological innovations, from cloud technology to smart buildings. It’s no wonder that our local MP, John Glen, had this to say:
“Full fibre will significantly improve the attractiveness of Salisbury for companies looking for a location with cutting-edge connectivity, boosting the number of high-quality job opportunities for constituents.”
What can business do with full-fibre broadband?
More and more businesses worldwide are embracing the efficiency boost and convenience of digital transformation. That means migrating to cloud-based business technologies, covering areas like communication, collaboration and customer contact. It means using VoIP calls over an internet connection, instead of
traditional phone lines. It also includes unified communications (UC), which involves consolidating all business comms (email, voice, video instant messaging etc.) into a single platform.
These technologies can greatly boost productivity, efficiency and flexibility in all sorts of ways, providing a great competitive advantage to organisations that use them. But it all depends on the web“ without a good connection, you’ll use up your bandwidth and slow yourself down.
With full fibre broadband, Salisbury businesses will be able to get ahead of the curve, giving them an unparalleled advantage. Over a single broadband connection, it will be possible to handle video conferencing, multiple VoIP calls, UC tools, cloud services and more. That makes your team more productive, and customers and clients more satisfied.
